A La Carte Camping
French theme offers culture, history lessons

By Heather Reichle

On a private island off the West Coast, campers are served a fun experience with a side of culture. Canoe Island French Camp offers children ages 9 to16 the opportunity to learn the French culture while participating in traditional camp activities.

The camp is located on the 47-acre San Juan Islands in Washington state. Canoe Island capitalizes on its secluded location by keeping session sizes to about 45 campers.

A Bit Of Background
The camp was founded in 1969 by Dr. Warren Austin, who had served along with General Patton’s army, and had deep interest in the French culture. He created the camp because he couldn’t find a French-speaking camp for his 9-year-old daughter.
